IWC Awakens the Most Refined Calendar

The emergence of quartz watches in the 1970s shook the watchmaking industry. Some manufacturers went under, others went down in history as winners. For the Swiss watchmaking house IWC, the recipe for success was held by the engineer Kurt Klaus, who believed that mechanical watches would regain value with time, primarily due to technical advances. And they did.
In 1985, IWC presented the revolutionary model the Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar. Klaus developed a mechanism with a perpetual calendar, one of the most useful and sophisticated watch complications ever. Today this legendary movement is revived by the Swiss watchmaker from Schaffhausen in their Portofino line.

Without Worries Until the End of the Century

The calendar is set with only one push of the crown. The movement will recognise different lengths of months and will automatically adjust the number of days regardless of whether it is a regular or a leap year. Displays of date, day of the week, and month are in total sync with the calendar until 2100, when a deviation in the Gregorian calendar will occur.

IWC has installed the movement with a perpetual calendar in the classic dimension of a 40-millimetre case for the first time. It belongs to the family of classically shaped Portofino timepieces that bear the name of the cosmopolitan Italian resort. Ergonomic comfort is also provided by the leather strap of Swiss origin. It is also the first edition available in a stainless steel in addition to the usual gold case. Two colours of metal for every taste.

Perfection of Design and Technology

Catching a glimpse of the dial offers true time travel. Days of the week are found on the left subdial, and the date is on the right, while the months with moon phases are located at the bottom. This display offers a lovely contrast to the silvered dial and hides another piece of engineering extraordinariness in its depths. The precise calculation during the manufacturing of the cogwheel for the display of moon phases ensures that the moon phase display will only deviate by one day in 577 years.

The automatic movement of Calibre 82650 boasts the Pellaton winding system and a 60-hour power reserve. The highly efficient winding system was developed by IWC’s former technical director Albert Pellaton in the 1950s. The sophisticatedly perfected heart of the watch can be admired through the transparent case back made of sapphire glass.
